About Bell Plastering and Damp-Proofing
I left school in 1990 and immediately began a plastering apprenticeship with Robert Cook & Sons in Kemptown, Brighton. Robert Cook & Sons, at the time, were the largest and the most renowned plastering firm in Brighton, taking on all types of plastering & rendering work but also specialising in Cornice work and exterior mouldings. I spent a lot of time with the older plasterers working on exterior moulding and rendering jobs around Sussex Square, Chichester Terrace, Brunswick square, Roedean Girls school and the Pavilion, mainly with an old master plasterer called Laurie Gandy and his labourer Les Playne.
At the same time I attended Lewes Tertiary college training as a plasterer, achieving a City & Guilds after three years. Lewes college ,soon after, stopped training plasterers and bricklayers due to cuts.
In 1993, myself and another apprentice, were laid off due to the recession.
I became self-employed and formed Bell-Plastering. I trained 2x apprentices and together we carried out plastering & rendering work throughout Sussex.
In 2003 I began training as a Damp-proofer and became a Sovereign approved Contractor. All work had to be done in accordance with their specification and all early work had to be verified before they would allow you to carry their name.
I have since been on various damp-proofing training courses learning new skills and acquiring different qualifications with companies such as Safeguard, Sovereign and Alliance.
I trained a 3rd apprentice, who achieved his NVQ in the plastering trade in 20..
I still carry out Cornice & Moulding work, when required, that I learnt on my early apprenticeship in 1990.
